AMS Board President, Dr. Meena Seshamani (1999) is appointed to serve as Director of Medicare; Scott Grinsell (2004) is named as Acting AMS Board President

The Association of Marshall Scholars announces a transition of leadership in the role of AMS Board President. As of July 6, 2021, former AMS Board President, Dr. Meena Seshamani (1999) has been appointed to serve as Director of the Center for Medicare and Deputy Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Dr. Seshamani previously served as Vice President of Clinical Care Transformation at MedStar Health and helped lead the Biden-Harris Transition gency Review Team for the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). She was previously director of the Office of Health Reform at HHS. 

Dr. Seshamani led the AMS as Board President from 2019 to 2021. Under her tenure, the AMS increased engagement through events including the national Marshall Forum (an annual event bringing together Marshall Scholars and other leading experts around pressing issues for the US and UK) and the US/UK Legislative Exchange (an annual delegation of legislators aiming to strengthen ties between members of US Congress and Members of British Parliament); promoted visibility through a major organizational rebrand and new website launch; and strengthened the scholarship through efforts such as its diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Taking over as Acting AMS Board President is Scott Grinsell (2004). Grinsell is a Senior Director at Elliott Management Corporation, an investment firm. He was previously a corporate lawyer at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz and served as a law clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and to Justice Sonia Sotomayor on the United States Supreme Court. He has served on the AMS Board as a member since 2012 in addition to his Board positions with the Rubin Museum of Art and Even Ground, Inc, as well as his membership of the Young Lions Committee of the New York Public Library and of the Council on Foreign Relations.


Both Dr. Seshamani and Mr. Grinsell attended the University of Oxford on Marshall Scholarships. Dr. Seshamani completed her D.Phil. (PhD) in Health Economics from Lincoln College in 1999 and Mr. Grinsell completed an M.Phil in Modern European History from Magdalen College in 2004.
